What is scalp psoriasis?
Itchy scalp, flaky, and reddish? You can associate it to dandruff, yet scalp psoriasis is entirely different.
Scalp psoriasis is a disease most commonly seen in the scalp. Fifty percent of those who experience the ailment have at least one flare up in the scalp apart from the formation of scaling plaque on the other parts of the body, such as legs, arms, forehead, nape, and behind the ears.
Scalp psoriasis is a skin disorder, which makes the skin because of the dead skin cell build up. The skin disorder will look like dry skin except so much worse in which you can see skin flaking. This condition is also reddish in appearance around the white patches of skin.
This skin disorder cannot catch from the sufferer. Instead, it can be in the genes, which means you have the possibility of experiencing the disorder once you have a family that experienced scalp psoriasis. Doctors also have their fingers pointed to the immune system for the cause of the disorder.
The specifics of its cause are yet to be pointed out. What we know is there is something defective in our immune system, which causes the skin cells to grow in mere days instead of its normal time that is weeks. Unfortunately, the old skin cells will not shed until its normal time, causing an increase build up, which then triggers the appearance of scalp psoriasis.
Scalp psoriasis is quite hard to diagnose if it only appears on the scalp. You will most likely consider the itchiness as dandruff not knowing you are already developing scalp psoriasis until it is already severe.
While current studies don’t impose threats about the condition, it is still important to see the doctor in order to know if maybe another form of skin disease like seborrheic dermatitis. This skin disease looks similar to scalp psoriasis with other causes and other treatments.
Another reason why you need to see the doctor is in order to get a prescription that will let the skin disorder heal faster. There are over-the-counter treatments for the disease like ointments, medicated shampoos and soaps, but stronger treatments need a prescription from the doctor.
Not giving scalp psoriasis the proper attention will cause you hair loss due to constant scratching and added stress, which will affect your performance and responsibilities.
